Oi gente, tudo bem?
Segue o texto escrito.

AM I A FEMINIST OR A HUMANIST?

I’ve seen along my life some people say: “I’m not a male chauvinist neither a feminist, I am a humanist” and also “I’m not a feminist but I believe in equal rights.” If you’re one of these people, I’ll try to show you that this statement just does not make sense.
To begin we should be aware of what exactly each term means. Male chauvinism is, according to the Oxford advanced learners dictionary, “the belief held by some men that men are more important, intelligent, etc. than women”, while feminism is “the belief and aim that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men; the struggle to achieve this aim”.  As rights we understand, for example, to vote, to work, to study, to make own decisions, and so on. The philosophical current of humanism is a “system of thought that considers that solving human problems with the help of reason is more important than religious beliefs”.
But it’s not only ordinary people that make this mistake: some celebrities also misunderstand the term and refuse to be called feminists. Let’s see some examples. In an interview, talking about her character in the movie “Suffragette”, Maryl Streep was asked if she was a feminist, which she denied replying she was a humanist. After reading this you may be like: nice, besides a great actress, she is also a philosopher. Humanism is not about gender discussion. Sarah Jessica Parker said she was not a feminist but believed in gender equality. As we saw the definitions previously, it is the same: feminism wants gender equality, Sarah just changed the words.
But why do people avoid so much the label? In my opinion, there are many reasons, but I’ve brought some possible answers. The first one is the confusion with the term. Some people tend to think feminism is the opposite of male chauvinism, what is not true, as we saw. Other possible reasons are because people think we hate men, which is not true at all. Or because feminists are not feminine and do not shave, use make up or high heels, paint nails, etc. The last one happens because some radical feminists think these are ways the system oppress women and don’t really do this things. But, in fact, feminism claims us the freedom to choose to wear, to be or to do whatever we want.

In conclusion, I’d like to say that this is a very complex issue that involves many aspects. It is like an ice berg, I just told you a very small part of a huge discussion. I just would like to add that if you identify yourself with the movement, don’t be afraid to join us. Thank you for listening.
